How do We Protect Ourselves Spiritually?

Jude 1:17-23

 

“But, dear friends, remember what the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ foretold.

They said to you, “In the last times there will be scoffers who will follow their own ungodly desires.”  These are the men who divide you, who follow mere natural instincts and do not have the Spirit.  But you, dear friends, build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit. Keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life. Be merciful to those who doubt; snatch others from the fire and save them; to others show mercy, mixed with fear—hating even the clothing stained by corrupted flesh.” Jude 1:17-23 (NIV)

 

What do we need to protect ourselves from?

 

False Teachimg

 

“Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.” Matthew 7:15 (NIV)

 

“I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. I promised you to one husband, to Christ, so that I might present you as a pure virgin to him.  But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ.  For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough.” 2 Corinthians 11:2-4 (NIV)

How do we protect ourselves from False Teaching?

 

We Need Discernment

 

“And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight,  so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ,” Philippians 1:9-10 (NIV)

 

1. We need to build up our Faith.

 

“But you, dear friends, build yourselves up in your most holy faith . . .” Jude 1:20a

 

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,  so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17

 

“until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.” Ephesians 4:13 (NIV)

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

God’s Word:

2. We need to pray in the Holy Spirit.

“ You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.” Romans 8:9 (NIV)

 

3. We need to keep ourselves in God’s Love.

 

“Keep yourselves in God’s love . . .” Jude1 21a (NIV)

 

“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love.  If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father’s commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.” John 15:9-11 (NIV)

Living Beyond Compromise

Psalm 1

 

“How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, Nor stand in the path of sinners, Nor sit in the seat of scoffers! But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night.  He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, Which yields its fruit in its season And its leaf does not wither; And in whatever he does, he prospers.  The wicked are not so, But they are like chaff which the wind drives away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, Nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.  For the LORD knows the way of the righteous, But the way of the wicked will perish.”  Psalm 1(NASB)

 

 

1. Three negatives:

The Subtle Progression of Evil:

 

Walk; counsel; ungodly;

 “Oh the happiness, many times over, of the one who does not even casually go through the motions or imitate the life of those who live in ungodliness.” Psalm 1:1 (My paraphrase)

 

 “We shall be happy, many times over, if we maintain a pure walk, free from even the slightest flirtation with evil.  If we begin to walk in the counsel of the wicked it is easy to slip slowly into the habitation of the scornful.”  Psalm 1:1 (My paraphrase)

 

The Example of Lot

 

      “So Lot chose the whole Jordan Valley for himself, and as he started toward the east, he and Abram separated.  Abram stayed in the land of Canaan. But Lot settled near the cities of the valley and put up his tents not far from Sodom, where the people were evil and sinned terribly against the LORD.”  Genesis 13:11-13 (CEV)

 

• Lot walked in the way of the ungodly.

2. The Positive Side

 

“But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night.” Psalm 1:2 (NASB)

 

“How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping it according to Thy word.”  Psalm 119:9 (NASB)

 

“Your word I have treasured in my heart, that I may not sin against Thee.”  Psalm 119:11 (NASB)

 

3. The Results of a Righteous Walk.

 

“He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, Which yields its fruit in its season And its leaf does not wither; And in whatever he does, he prospers.”  Psalm 1:3 (NASB)

 

4. The Alternative of the Wicked.

 

The wicked are not so, But they are like chaff which the wind drives away.” Psalm1:4 (NASB)

 

The Contrast.

 

• Happy many times over, not so the wicked. 

 

• Delights and meditates in the law, not so the wicked.

 

• Is like a tree, not so the wicked.

 

• Is fruitful and prosperous, not so the wicked. 

 

“And everyone who hears these words of mine, and does not act upon them, will be like a foolish man, who built his house upon the sand.  And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and burst against that house; and it fell, and great was its fall.”  Matthew 7:26-27

 

“Thus I considered all my activities which my hands had done and the labor which I had exerted, and behold all was vanity and striving after wind and there was no profit under the sun.” Ecc. 2:11(NASB)

 

5. The Warning

 

“Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, Nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.” Psalm 1:5 (NASB)   

 

6. The End

What Happens when the Lord is Your Shepherd, Psalm 23

 

1.  Recovery from your past problems. 

 

He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters.  He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake.” Psalm 23:2-3 (NASB)

 

2.  A righteous source for provisions in the here and now. 

 

 “He guides me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake.” Psalm 23 3b (NASB)

 

3. Protection. 

 

“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.” Psalm 23:4 (NASB)

 

 

4. Peace.

 

“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You have anointed my head with oil; My cup overflows.” Psalm 23 5 (NASB)

 

5. Prosperity. 

 

“You have anointed my head with oil; My cup overflows.” Psalm 23:5b (NASB)

 

              “Surely goodness and loving mercy will follow me all the day of our lives.” Psalm 23:6a (NASB)

 

6. A promise of permanence. 

 

“And I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.” Psalm 23:6b (NASB)

 

  

 “GOD, my shepherd! I don’t need a thing. You have bedded me down in lush meadows, you find me quiet pools to drink from. True to your word, you let me catch my breath and send me in the right direction. Even when the way goes through Death Valley, I’m not afraid when you walk at my side. Your trusty shepherd’s crook makes me feel secure. You serve me a six-course dinner right in front of my enemies. You revive my drooping head; my cup brims with blessing.  Your beauty and love chase after me every day of my life. I’m back home in the house of GOD for the rest of my life.” Psalm 23 (MSG)

We were very blessed to have a team of 12, mostly young people, who came from Broadway Baptist Church, Fort Worth, Texas, to take a Music Camp style VBS for us here at Grace Fellowship. They were marvelous and we thank them for all their hard work over the last week. Be Reconcilers

2 Corinthians 5:1-6:2

 

1. Motivation (2 Cor. 5:11-15)

 

“But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, so that the surpassing greatness of the power will be of God and not from ourselves;” 2 Corinthians 4:7 (NASB)

DELAYED BY DESIGN

 

When the king of Egypt let the people go, God did not take them by the road that goes up the coast to Philistia, although it was the shortest way. God thought, “I do not want the people to change their minds and return to Egypt when they see that they are going to have to fight.” Exodus 13:17 (GNB)

Four Things That Prolong Delay

 

 

1.  FEAR

 

“…They would not enter the land.  They said… `We are afraid … The people there are             stronger and taller than we are…”  Deut 1:26 + 28 (GN)

 

                        Instead:

 

“Fear not, for I am with you.  Do not be dismayed.  I am your God, I will strengthen             you and I will help you… and uphold you…”  Isa 41:10 (LB)

 

 

 

2. FRET

 

            “…On the way the people lost their patience and spoke against God and Moses.  They             complained…”  Num 21:4-5 (GN)

 

            “Impatience will get you into trouble.”  Pr. 19:2 (GN)

 

                        Instead:

 

“Rest in the Lord; wait patiently for Him to act …  Don’t fret and worry — it only leads to             harm.”  Ps. 37:7-8 (LB)

 

            “God has set the right time for everything.”  Eccl. 3:11 (GN)

 

 

3.  FAINT

4.  FORGET

                        Instead:

 

            “I will bless the Lord and not forget the great things He does for me.”  Ps. 103:2 (LB)

 

            “The Lord is not being slow to carry out his promises …but He is being patient with you...”  2 Pet. 3:3-8 (JB)

 

            “These things won’t happen right away.  Slowly, steadily, surely, the time approaches when the vision will be fulfilled.  If it seems slow, do not despair, for these things will surely             come to pass.  Just be patient!  They will not be overdue a single day!”  Hab 2:3 (LB)

SIX STEPS

 

1.  PRAY FOR GUIDANCE

 

            “A man is foolish to trust himself.  But those who use God’s wisdom are safe.”

2. GET THE FACTS

 

            “Every prudent man acts out of  knowledge.”  Proverbs 13:16 (LB)

 

            “It’s stupid to decide before knowing the facts!”  Proverbs 18:13 (LB)

3. ASK FOR ADVICE

 

            “The more advice you get, the more likely you are to win.”

            Proverbs 24:6 (GN)

 

            “Get good advice and you will succeed.”  Proverbs 20:28 (GN)

4. CALCULATE THE COST

            “It is a trap for a man to dedicate something rashly and only later to consider his vows..”              Pr.  20:25 (NIV)

 

“For which one of you, when he wants to build a tower, does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if he has enough to complete it?” Luke 14:28

 

“Or what king, when he sets out to meet another king in battle, will not first sit down and consider whether he is strong enough with ten thousand men to encounter the one coming against him with twenty thousand?” Luke 14:31 (NASB)

5. PREPARE FOR PROBLEMS

 

            “A sensible man watches for problems ahead and prepares to meet them… The simpleton             never looks and suffers the consequences.”   Proverbs 22:3 (LB)

 

“The demon has often tried to kill him by throwing him into a fire or into water. Please have pity and help us if you can!”  Jesus replied, “Why do you say ‘if you can’? Anything is possible for someone who has faith!”  Right away the boy’s father shouted, “I do have faith! Please help me to have even more.” Mark 9:22-24 (CEV)

6. FACE YOUR FEARS
